Puppy supply list
Things to have ready when your puppy goes home.
Crates/Kennels: Purchase a plastic cubby type crate or kennel. I believe that these types of
crates and kennels simulate a more "den like" place for our puppies. Plan to use the crate and
kennel initially for at night and when you are home for " a personal puppy time outs". For the
workday--puppy proof a small area ( bathroom or laundry area) that the puppy can "go potty".
Line a section of the floor with puppy pads or papers to encourage elimination here. Place the
kennel in this small area you go away, be sure to provide with toys and chew bones to keep
your puppy busy while you are away.
Food: the puppies will be eating Iams Puppy formula, Iams Smart Puppy proactive health.
1-12 months. It comes in a bright yellow bag--(special note: do not purchase the bag that
labeled for large breeds)
Food and Water Bowls: Buy 2 separate-- one for food and the other for water. The best
options are glass, ceramic,or stainless steel. Do not buy plastic.
Toys: Buy many toys in a variety of shapes, textures and sounds. Plan on rotating them
frequently to prevent boredom. The puppies just love tiny tennis balls, and soft squeakers, and
bones. Puppies that are bored with their toys are puppies looking to make bad choices. Have
a tub or box for the toys that are not "out" in use.
Shampoo: I do not have a favorite brand but price does seem to dictate quality. Buy a thick,
concentrated more expensive formula. The cheaper formulas will over-clean and leave the
puppies extra dry and itchy. Plan on diluting the thick formula a bit, before bathing, to help you
use less and also help with rinsing the puppy off when done.
Bones: Rawhide is OK for puppies BUT-- Buy bones that are big and made in USA.
Woodman's has some made in the USA rawhides. Large sized bones will only allow small
pieces of the bone to soften up and be chewed off. When puppies eat small rawhide bones
they will get it softened up then try to swallow the whole bone.
Training treats/Rewards: We have the puppies started on a treat made by Purena dog food.
It is Purena's Moist and Meaty dog food. It comes in a box of 12 packets of semi-moist food
bits. These bits are very easy for the young puppies to eat and they just love it. They receive
these, here with us, for listening and potty training. The key to this reward system to have the
puppies receive small bites of treats, they just love, that are very easy to eat and swallow. This
will provide immediate reward vs given a biscuit type of reward that the puppies have to carry of
and chew down somewhere else. We want the puppies to be able to eat their reward quick and
look up, to us, for more cues and rewards.
,
Specialty toys/bones: These are toys and bones that make the puppies/dogs work to get the
reward/treat out of them. The puppies are required to use time and brain energy to get the treat
out of the toy. The more puppies work at doing (getting the treat out) the more tired they
become. These types of toys are essential for alone time. They are great for the family work
day, when youngsters are required to home alone for hours. Buy a few of these types of toys
and alternate these as well. Sterilized hollow bones and Kongs are a few examples of these
types of busy toys, there are also some toys that are shaped like balls and dice that will
disperse a tidbit of kibble out as the toy is being played with by the puppy. We fill the toy/bones
with soft canned food. Some families have even frozen the toys, the night before, to make the
treat even last longer the next day. We try to purchase toys/bones that are dishwasher safe so
we can get them cleaned/sterilized before we load them up again.
Vaccines: The puppies will have their age appropriate vaccines here with us but they will need
to get boosters. We will go over their health history with you so you know when to take your new
puppy in to the veterinarian next. We supply each puppy with a stuffed animal toy that has the
scent of our home, their mom and siblings on it, this will aid in their transition on to their new
homes.
Puppy proofing: Puppies will chew on thing to learn and explore, make sure very small items
are unavailable for injestion. They seem to just love hotwheel cars and polly pocket childrens
toys.
There are several considerations you must make before bringing you new puppy home. The first thing you should do is to check around the home for safety concerns. Puppy proofing your home is essential.
